Herald, Talisman win national honors

WKU’s College Heights Herald news and advertising operation and the Talisman yearbook were honored in recent competitions.

The combined news content of the College Heights Herald newspaper, the WKUHerald.com web site and the WKUHerald mobile apps earned Gold Medalist designation from Columbia Scholastic Press Association for print-and-digital hybrid publications. In judging for the Gold Medalist award, the Herald earned 956 out of a possible 1,000 points for verbal and visual content and essential elements.

The honor covered the 2013-14 academic year. The Herald’s editor for Fall 2013 was Michael McKay, a Louisville senior. Joanna Williams, a May 2014 graduate from Clarksville, Tennessee, who now lives in Montgomery, Alabama, was editor for the Spring 2014 semester.

The Talisman yearbook also earned a Gold Medalist designation from CSPA, scoring 912 out of a possible 1,000 points. The Talisman also was honored with a Silver Crown award in CSPA’s Crown competition, which placed it among the top four yearbooks in the country for 2014, as determined by CSPA judges.

The 2014 Talisman also won both yearbook Apple Awards from the College Media Association for :

— First place, best cover.
— First place, best yearbook spread.

The 2014 Talisman, “Reckoning,” was edited by Katie Honadle, a May 2014 graduate from Owensboro who now lives in New York City.

The College Heights Herald advertising and creative staff earned several awards at the College Media Business and Advertising Managers conference. In a contest that covered the 2014 calendar year, the Herald staff won:

— Second place nationally for best mobile app sales increase.

— Third place nationally for best audio ad or underwriting spot, best sponsored content or native advertising and best fundraising idea.

— Fourth place nationally for best online self-promotion ad, best multimedia ad campaign, best group promotion and best video ad or underwriting spot.

Sidney Wahle, a Louisville senior, was advertising manager for the Spring 2014 semester. Zachary Tatoian, a Middletown, Delaware, senior, was the Herald’s advertising manager and creative director for the Fall 2014 semester.
