On February 21, 2026, student journalists from Western Kentucky University, University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, Murray State University, and South Eastern Missouri State University gathered in the alumni center for a free, day-long workshop exploring the biggest challenges facing student media today. Sponsored by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression and its Student Press Freedom Initiative, the event focused on defending your right to report and publish, navigating state open meetings and open records laws, and tackling the tough stories that only student media can tell. This invaluable training has opened the eyes of several of the attendees, sharing stories, and talking about some of the issues each campus faces. We’re so grateful for the opportunity from FIRE.
