Congratulations to Cara Anna, East Africa correspondent for The Associated Press and part of the AP team honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their coverage of the war in Ukraine. Anna was editor-in-chief of the College Heights Herald in Spring 1995 and was part of the byline or a contributor on three of the eight stories cited in the award.
The public service citation read: “Courageous reporting from the besieged city of Mariupol that bore witness to the slaughter of civilians in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”
Anna is the 37th Student Publications alumnus to be honored with the Pulitzer Prize, either individually or as part of a team.
In other Pulitzer news, Herald alumna Nikita Stewart Henderson, real estate editor at The New York Times, was an editor on a package of stories that was a finalist for the Pulitzer for breaking news reporting. The finalist citation read: “For its urgent and comprehensive coverage of New York City’s deadliest fire in decades, expertly combining accountability reporting across platforms with compassionate portraits of the 17 victims and the Gambian community that had long called the Bronx high-rise home.”
Cheers to these fine Herald alumnae!
