College Heights Herald launches Herald en Español

Student staff members on the College Heights Herald this month launched Herald en Español, Spanish-language coverage of the WKU and Bowling Green community.

David Quintanilla, a Bowling Green sophomore and a member of the College Heights Herald staff since his first semester, works on a style guide for Herald en Español, launched this month to serve Bowling Green’s Spanish-speaking communities.

The Herald en Español group, led by David Quintanilla, a Bowling Green sophomore, are translating major stories into Spanish, covering news themselves in Spanish and producing podcasts and videos, including a Spanish version of the Herald’s Top of the Week news recap podcast, called Arriba de la Semana.

The group also is producing a weekly newsletter each Monday.

“We wanted to reach as much of the community that we can because we feel like we are the strongest and most dedicated newsroom in the area,” Herald Editor-in-Chief Jake McMahon said. “We felt like there was a lack of coverage for the Hispanic community in Bowling Green and it’s our responsibility to make sure they get the news coverage they deserve.”

In addition to Quintanilla, also involved in the Herald en Español are News Editor Anthony Clauson, reporters Diego Alcaraz-Monje, Martha Castro-Rodriguez,  Nathalia Arechiga, Abigail Vickers, Isaiah Merricks, Noah Villanueva, Diamond Nunez, photographer Natasha Gomez and videographer Caroline Chubb.

Quintanilla is working on producing a style guide for Herald en Español based on the Spanish version of The Associated Press Stylebook and the group also is planning to launch pages on social media platforms.

The idea for Herald in Español came from Clauson’s trip to the College Media Mega Workshop, hosted by the Associated Collegiate Press in Minneapolis in July. He brought the idea back to Bowling Green and Quintanilla, Alcaraz-Monje and Gomez were instrumental in getting the project launched.
