SAVE THE DATES: Centennial celebrations in 2024-25

The coming academic year will mark the Centennial of WKU Student Publications and we are planning events throughout the year to celebrate. It’s time to pull out your calendar and mark down some dates.

Our main events will be:

  • Student Publications Centennial Homecoming Breakfast, Nov. 16 (tentative). Homecoming is likely to be very late in 2024, and it appears that the only logical date is Nov. 16 — though WKU has not yet made it official. We’re banking that’s the day, so go ahead and mark it on your calendar. Because Homecoming is so busy across campus, and because so many of our alumni have multiple Homecoming events they want to attend, we’ll confine our Homecoming commemoration of the Student Pubs Centennial to our annual breakfast. Details to come.
  • Student Publications Centennial Celebration Weekend, April 25-26, 2025. We’ll have an event that spans Friday and Saturday and will include a reception at the Adams-Whitaker Student Publications Center, some keynote speakers from among our alumni and a celebratory luncheon or dinner. We’re looking into hotels for room blocks and will get out details as soon as we get them together.

We’ll also have two student-focused events that alumni will be welcome to attend:

  • Talisman 100th Anniversary, Sept. 5, 2024. We’ll launch the year by marking 100 years of excellence from the Talisman, once WKU’s yearbook and now a thriving life-and-culture magazine. Talisman has won 22 national Pacemaker Awards, is in the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame, and is among The Pacemaker 100 most successful student media outlets in the history of the Pacemaker Award, the top honor for student-run media outlets.
  • College Heights Herald 100th Birthday Party, Jan. 29, 2025. Since we have a definitive date for the Herald’s birthday, that’s when we’ll celebrate our newsroom turning 100. Founded as a campus newspaper, she is a gray old lady no more, delivering content daily in an email newsletter and online at WKUHerald.com and publishing monthly enterprise newsmagazines during the fall and spring semesters. The Herald has won 23 Pacemakers, is in the ACP Hall of Fame and is No. 6 on The Pacemaker 100 list.

In addition to the four events above, we’re also planning several other ways to mark the occasion, including a monthly series of speakers to deliver talks about topics of interest to our students on staff at Student Publications and to the WKU and Bowling Green communities at large.
